TOP 10 BIGGEST MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WITH THEIR WEBSITE

WEBSITE MISTAKE #1 CODE STRUCTURE

One of the biggest mistakes that people make with their website is they fail to understand code structure and the meaning behind it. I try to educate my staff as well as my students to think about how a book is written or better yet a “thesis”. When you view a thesis you can see that the first thing that you see is the title of a page. The next thing that you will see is good use of subheadings and paragraphs. When you write about any subject at all you can use this format to help the search engines understand clearly what you are writing about.

WEBSITE MISTAKE #2 BE CLEAR ABOUT YOUR SUBJECT MATERIAL

When people start to ramble on about everything and anything, you lose the interest of the spiders and any person trying to read your article. Write for the laymen and don’t try to complicate a lot of your writings with rarely used terminologies. If you want to impress people be easily understood. This will also impress the search engine. I like to use readability.com to see how I am doing as far as the ease of my reading level. This will affect your search engine optimization as well!

WEBSITE MISTAKE #3 THE USE OF FILE NAMES

Another mistake that people make with their website is the use of appropriate file names in media. Describe that media in the file name. When you upload media to your server it will generate a URL with whatever that media is named. If my file-name is 0001.jpg then you will notice that your URL will be generated and it will look something like this. http://yourwebsite.com/images/0001.jpg . Does that really communicate what the picture is about? No! So change the names of your files before you upload them to your website!

WEBSITE MISTAKE #4 WIDE PARAGRAPHS

One thing that I have and that is getting more and more popular is the landscape monitors. When I visit a website that has text clear across the screen and I have to find my way back to wherever I left off in the previous sentence I usually leave pretty fast. Make the paragraphs narrower so that people can read them easier.

WEBSITE MISTAKE #5 BUSY WEBSITES

Busy websites are a big mistake and I think they are becoming more and more popular because people want to sell so much advertising space on their websites. They shrink the text down to make more room for above the fold content. This is a big mistake, if you have too much on your website then clean it up a bit. If a surfer has to dissect your website just to find what they are looking for chances are they are not going to stick around long. This will increase your bounce rate and lessen your click-through rate on your website. I know you want to make money but in the long run this is going to hurt your progress!

WEBSITE MISTAKE #6 TOO MANY MODULES AND PLUGINS IN CMS SYSTEMS

With today’s Content Management Systems it’s so easy just to grab a plugin or module for a quick fix on our websites. These will bog your website down and make it slower. CMS systems use a lot of data resources by accessing the database several times even for one user. This will increase the amount of CPU that you need to serve content to your visitors. A better solution would be to have the function as a part of your theme.

WEBSITE MISTAKE #7 BAD SERVERS CHOICES

This website mistake can cost you big time. If you are getting over 500 to 1000 visitors a day then do yourself a favor and get a VPS or a dedicated server. This is especially true if you have a lot of pictures and media that you are serving up to your visitors. I know you want to be as efficient as possible but skimping on this will cost you many valuable visits. Make sure that you have a server that will serve your visitors and website content quickly and efficiently! Shared servers are nice for starting off on a new website so that you can learn the ropes of being a webmaster but if you are any good at it you should grow out of that within 6 months to a year!

WEBSITE MISTAKE #8 NO SOCIAL SHARING BUTTONS

The whole idea of the internet is to be social! Why would you not have social sharing buttons on your website? Unless you are living in the Stone Age then you know what Facebook and Twitter are. Get them on your website and do it as soon as you can. If I like your article or pictures I should be able to share them on my social network platforms with my friends and family. Provide me a way of doing that or I will go share someone else’s content that was considerate enough to give social sharing buttons on their website.

WEBSITE MISTAKE #9 NO SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE

If I go to a website and I think that the material that the webmaster is talking about is interesting, I will look for a subscribe button. Sadly enough I find that many webmasters do not offer a subscription service. Just if you don’t know, a subscription service will email your fans anytime you post new content on your website. This saves them the cumbersome task of checking your website every day to see if you created anything new. Be a little considerate and give your fans a time-saving tool by letting them subscribe to your website when new content is posted.

WEBSITE MISTAKE #10 FAILURE TO LIST NAME, ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER

Are you trying to hide? Yeah that’s what Google thinks when you are not listing your name address and phone number. You are also losing out on being indexed locally for your products and services. You know it’s easier to get your website listed locally than it is worldwide? How does this happen? This happens by providing your local contact information on all your webpages. Put it in the footer or header so that you can take advantage of this local indexing that the search engines have provided for you!
